Question: Discuss how event can have a huge impact on a society. Answer: Arranging an event can have a huge impact on a society. Arranging events can be considered as a positive as well as a negative factor. Events can be in many forms that contribute to changing the economic condition of a society. The particular essay sheds light on the different type of events and the manner in which they affect the lives of the people living in a society. With the organising of an event, the economic condition of a society changes drastically. The essay focuses on Rio de Janeiro and the impact that events industry have in the region. The unique features of every event are analysed and the significance it brings about in the economy of Rio de Janeiro is also portrayed in the essay. In order to organise an event, an event manager needs to be aware of the different types of events that exist and the ways to manage them. Framework for each event is different from the other and as a result analysis is required for identifying the difference. Mega event: According to Getz and Getz (2017), mega-events are the international events that gain huge popularity among the people. This is a popular form of event and the global attention it receives makes it a huge success among the people of a country. An example of a mega event can be the Fifa World Cup or Olympics that are staged by different countries every four years. It helps in attracting people from various countries thereby, affecting the economy in both positive as well negative manners. Hallmark event: This type of events is the fair and cultural events that are staged in a foreign country. The fairs visit various countries in order to promote the culture of that particular country. Moreover, the country fair organised by the Government can also be considered as this type of events. These events do not cause many economic fluctuations. Community event: Community events are organised in order to mark special occasions. These types of events take place within the community in order to celebrate a special day or mark a memorandum. The examples include events in Times Square during Christmas or gatherings of romantic couples during Valentines Day. These events are arranged spontaneously in order to make the day memorable. Business event: Business events refer to the formal business arrangements that are organised by a company. The main purpose of these events is to identify similar organisations in the society and provides a change of atmosphere from work. Browning et al. (2016) stated that such arrangements need to be done keeping in mind the financial position of the companies. Cultural event: This is considered to be a traditional form of event. During this event, the cultural heritage of a country is brought about and people tend to understand the tradition of the country. It can be arranged by the people living in a society or by the Government of a country in order to maintain the cultural trends of the country. As observed by Bowdin et al. (2011) arranging the different types of events require proper analysis of the events and its requirements. Hence, it can be said that event industry plays a vital role in arranging these events and ensuring that these are managed in an effective manner. The requirements of every event are different from one another and hence proper care need to be undertaken in order to categorise the events. Events industry helps in calculating the financial costs required for organising these events. As stated by Goldpatt (2014) the organising of the Fifa World Cup in 2014 had a huge impact on the economic condition of Brazil. The event industry of Rio de Janeiro had to predict the costs and the demand and supply of resorts in the country. However, the skilful manner in which the events were arranged suggested the need for such events industry in the market. In this regard, the impact of the events in different sectors of a country or region can be analysed. Regional economic development: As mentioned earlier, the staging of the Fifa World Cup in 2014, had a huge negative impact on the economy and population of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. This is because people from all around the world visited the country to witness the events and most of them ended up in the country. Apart from this hosting such a global event proved to be too much expensive for a country in which part of a community is underdeveloped. Regional social/cultural development: According to Page and Connell (2014), one of the positives that events have is the development of communication among the people of various regions. This helps in understanding the various cultures that are involved in the world and helps people develop interests in these cultures. In the case of Rio de Janiero, arranging a fair from India can help the people understand the Indian culture. Regional environmental development: Robertson (2013) opined that events can disrupt the sustainability of a country. This is mainly because of the fact that it creates pollution that affects the environment of a society. However, it also helps in developing proper infrastructure such transportation mode. Particular emphasis is given to the development of the roads in order to create a good impression among the people visiting the country. In the case of Rio de Janeiro, the arrangement of the Fifa World Cup led to a negative effect on the environment but at the same time helped in developing the infrastructure of the country. Thus, it can be concluded that the events need to be organised keeping in mind the advantages and disadvantages it causes to the society. In the case of Rio de Janeiro, the fact that the country is developing makes it difficult to arrange mega-events. Although such a mega event has been arranged by the country, the fact that it caused a huge economic drainage cannot be overlooked. Thus, it is the responsibility of the events industry and the Government to make proper assessments before planning an event.
